Differences

Fundamentally, personal protection and sport dog training is the same, however, in actuality there are some key differences. The larges difference is the dog knows one is a game, and the other is real. In that difference, one is varietal in terms of training different elements and activities and the other is less demanding.

How does that impact your training OR liabilities?

Liability wise, a personal protection dog could potentially set you up for a whole world of trouble, and reading your local legislation is imperative to understanding what could happen in the event your K9 Companions NEEDS to protect you.

For personal protection, the dog is prepared and educated how to interfere with and completely stop an assault. Home and property, general public, and rural settings all carry different liabilities and we can discuss this in detail, however, at the end of the day, those liabilities are something you have to weigh.

For sport, the dog understands that there are certain rules, expectations, and requirements and understand also that generally, the game is just that- a game… that starts and stops, and that there are certain ques, settings, and markers that let the dog know it is time.

Sport GENERALLY also includes a lot more than just mouth work. It includes detailed requirements with item retrievals, nose work, control and release, and agility elements. Competitions are very elaborate and the dog is generally pushed fairly hard in a lot of areas to attain ribbons.

Similarities

A bite is a bite is a bite. That being said, all dogs bite- even the dog that the stranger passing you on the street who gives kisses to everyone.

A fundamental element to training and “mouth work” is awareness. Awareness paired with a good bond with the handler and a natural propensity for territorial behavior means, that any personal protection or sport dog, could still bite according to the situation.

That means any and all liability needs to be consciously addressed before taking the plunge.

Protection work can be FUN!

Generally either facet of protection can be very fun for both the K9 and the Handler. Growing and learning together as a team is invaluable, and as you grow and learn together, you can tailor the experience to how you need it to be.

Protection training can be EXCELLENT for dogs who naturally have a propensity to use their mouth or are nippy as adults, teaching them appropriate use and timing for that kind of behavior. Making them aware can be very beneficial to them understanding that it is NOT an initial go to response for them, giving them better options than using their mouth.

The bonus? They know WHEN and WHAT IS appropriate – thus decreasing unprovoked liability.
